Create Your Own To-Do List

One of our first moving tips is to create your own personal list for everything you need to get done. Often people who move house end up forgetting important task such as changing addresses with the Post Office, canceling utilities and subscriptions-don’t be one of them! Whether it’s a checklist or writing on your calendar when things need to be done, this can help you stay organised and prevent you from wasting any money.

If you don’t know where to start or what you should be organising, take a look at our downloadable moving house checklist to get you started.

Moving Tips

Find a Professional Removalist

One of the biggest moving house tips on this list is finding a moving company and hiring the right one for you. Getting the right removalist can save you a lot of stress and time. Also, moving companies can offer many services that can make your life easier, including:

  • Disassembly and reassembly of furniture
  • Packing services
  • Storage facilities
  • Insurance

Please Note: Before you settle on a removalist, you should always compare removal quotes and services. This way you can choose which mover is right for you.

Gather All Necessary Packing Materials

If you’re packing yourself, then there are some items you should gather to make the process easier. Alongside boxes, here is a list of your must-have items:

  • Packing tape (to secure boxes)
  • Packing paper (to protect glassware and plates)
  • Bubble wrap (for fragile and electrical items)
  • Blanket wraps or plastic covers (to protect large furniture items)

Ask supermarkets for any un-used boxes or simply use any baskets that you have around the house. This can save you a lot of money than paying for boxes online or from removalists. You can also look on direct packing supplies, which offer packages both new and second hand packing materials. If you’re moving overseas, then in most cases your removalist may have to pack your items for you for insurance purposes-double check if this applies for your move.

Donate or Sell Unwanted Items

If you have a lot of unwanted items in your home that aren’t coming with you, about two weeks before you move contact a charity and arrange a pickup. Not only are you helping a good cause, but this will in turn save you money on your removal costs. One of the biggest factors on price is the volume of a move, so reducing the number of items you want to take with you will lower the cost of your move.

There is also the option to sell your belongings, which is a great way to save money. You can ask your friends if any of them are interested in what you have to sell or you can use a website such as to sell your belongings.

Create a Labeling System for Boxes

By doing this, you’ll make the moving in process go a lot quicker. There are many ways that you can organise your boxes; you could simply label the boxes which room they belong to or what are their contents, but there are other ways too.

You can choose to number the boxes and have a list with what is in each numbered box. This is great if you want a bit of privacy with what you’re moving. Another thing that you can do is have a colour-coding system. Each colour can correspond to a particular room, so the removalists know which room to take the boxes to.

Make an “Essentials” Box

Our final moving tip is to get some essential items that will make the transition process of moving much easier. For example, some of the items below could be of use to you once you’re in the new house:

  • Clean bed linen for each bed
  • Toilet paper
  • Bottles of water
  • Kettle
  • Cups and paper plates
  • Cutlery
  • All purpose cleaner
  • Bin liners
  • Torches
  • Screw Driver
  • Scissors
  • Toiletries
  • Set of towels
  • Medication, such as pain relief
  • First aid kit
  • Dustpan/brush
  • Kitchen sponge
  • Detergent for dishes

Also, there may be some items that aren’t on this list, but may still be applicable for your move. For example: food for any pets, favourite toys for children or coffee to keep everyone’s energy levels up throughout your move!
